Falcons Fall In Five Despite Multiple Career Performances For First MAC Loss

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio
The Bowling Green State University volleyball team went five sets with the second-place team in the MAC, Eastern Michigan, on Thursday night (Oct. 10) with three of the five sets going into extra points. Eastern Michigan took the first set in the extra points before the Falcons responded in the second. The third set went to a 30-28 score, falling in favor of Eastern Michigan, but the Falcons battled back to force a fifth set. The fifth, like the first and the third sets, went into extra points with EMU taking a 16-14 final.  

How It Happened 
Set 1: Eastern Michigan 26, Bowling Green 24

  • The Falcons utilized an early 4-0 run to go up 5-3 in the set before another 3-0 run made it a 7-1 stretch and 8-4 advantage. 
  • Eastern Michigan responded with a 6-0 run to take a 10-8 lead, forcing a Bowling Green timeout.
  • EMU added a point after the timeout for a 7-0 run and 11-8 lead before BGSU ended the run. The Falcons responded with a 3-0 burst to knot it up at 11-11.
  • The Eagles registered a point to go up 12-11, but the Falcons put together a 5-1 stretch to move in front 16-13 with an 8-2 stretch, forcing an Eastern Michigan timeout.
  • EMU chipped away at the lead before a 4-1 stretch tied the set at 23-23, resulting in the second Bowling Green timeout of the set.
  • BGSU tallied the first point out of the timeout, but a 3-0 run gave the set to the Eagles, 26-24.

Set 2: Bowling Green 25, Eastern Michigan 17

  • Bowling Green opened the second set with a 4-0 run, including two Sydnie Hernandez aces. EMU added two points, but another 4-0 run for the Falcons made it an 8-2 lead to force an Eagles timeout.
  • Out of the timeout, the run continued for BGSU, adding three more for a 7-0 stretch and 11-2 run. 
  • The two teams went back-and-forth before a 3-0 run for the Falcons pushed their advantage to 19-11.
  • Another 3-0 burst for Bowling Green extended the lead to 22-13 in the set, closing it out for a 25-17 score.

Set 3: Eastern Michigan 30, Bowling Green 28

  • The two teams started the set going back and forth with the Falcons maintaining a slim lead in the early going before EMU tied it up at 8-8.
  • Bowling Green landed a point, but a 3-0 run for Eastern Michigan pushed them to an 11-9 lead to bring a BGSU timeout.
  • Eastern Michigan added another 3-0 run out of the timeout to make it a 6-0 stretch and 14-9 score with the second Bowling Green timeout.
  • The Falcons battled back with a 3-0 run of their own to trim the lead down to 14-12 to force a timeout from the EMU bench.
  • The Eagles registered a point, but the Falcons added a 3-0 run to make it a 6-1 stretch for a 15-15 tie.
  • BGSU pushed in front 17-16, but a 3-0 Eastern Michigan run swung the score to them 19-17.
  • The set advanced to a 19-19 tie before EMU went on a 3-0 run to take a 22-19 lead. 
  • A 4-1 stretch for Bowling Green tied the set at 23-23 with the set going into extra points. EMU finished it off with a 3-0 run to take the set 30-28.

Set 4: Bowling Green 25, Eastern Michigan 20

  • Eastern Michigan started the set with a 3-0 run to jump out in front. The Falcons were able to utilize a 4-1 stretch to knot it up at 6-6.
  • The two teams traded points before a 3-0 run for the Falcons pushed BGSU to a 12-10 lead, but EMU responded to tie it up at 12-12.
  • The two continued to trade points up to the media timeout with EMU leading 15-14.
  • The ties carried through to 15-15, 16-16, 17-17 and 18-18 before a 5-1 stretch for the Falcons put them in front, 21-18, forcing an Eastern Michigan timeout.
  • Eastern Michigan landed a point out of the timeout, but two more for BGSU stretched the lead to 23-19 with the second Eagles timeout of the set.
  • The Falcons maintained their lead through the set for a 25-20 score to force a fifth.

Set 5: Eastern Michigan 16, Bowling Green 14

  • The Falcons tallied an early 3-0 run to push ahead 5-3 in the set, but the Eagles tied it at 5-5.
  • The Falcons answered with another 3-0 run to take an 8-5 lead to force the media break with the teams switching sides.
  • The runs continued to swing with Eastern Michigan knotting it up at 8-8 with a 3-0 run of their own.
  • Bowling Green pushed ahead 10-8 after the tie, extending the lead to 13-10, but back-to-back EMU points pulled Eastern within one at 13-12 to force a BGSU timeout.
  • The run for EMU reached 3-0 to tie it up at 13-13 before a 14-14 tie forced the set into extra points. 
  • EMU landed a point to move in front 15-14 with BGSU taking a timeout. EMU finished the set after the timeout for a 16-14 score.

Falcon Stat Facts

  • As a team, the Falcons set season-highs in kills (70), digs (83) and assists (68). The 83 digs are the most for Bowling Green since having 92 against Ball State on Nov. 22, 2022. 
  • Lauryn Hovey and Lindsey LaPinta both surpassed the 20-dig mark for the match for BGSU. Hovey finished with a career-high 28 while LaPinta finished with 20 for the second straight match.
  • Hovey added her second double-double of the season, finishing with 16 kills in addition to her 28 digs. Hovey filled out her stat line with a .297 hitting percentage, three blocks and two assists. 
  • Hovey wasn't the only double-double for BGSU. Amanda Otten also tallied her second double-double of the season, logging a career-high 63 assists and 11 digs. Otten's 63 assists are the most by a Falcon since Jaden Walz had 66 against Ball State on Nov. 18, 2023.
  • With Hovey and Otten both having double-doubles, it's the first time two Falcons have posted double-doubles in the same match this season. 
  • Mia Tyler led the team in kills, landing a career-high 21 on a career-high 55 attempts while maintaining an attack percentage of .291. The 21 kills are the most by a Falcon this season and the first total to surpass 20 this year. 
  • Alexis Mettille added a career-high 16 kills for the Orange and Brown while maintaining a team-best .423 hitting percentage. Mettille also registered a team-leading and season-high three aces. 
  • Jessica Andrews finished with a team-high nine blocks, recording two solo blocks in the match to give her 40 for her BGSU career. Mettille registered one solo block to give her 40 as well. Andrews and Mettille are now tied for seventh during the program's Rally Scoring Era for the stat. 
  • Sydnie Hernandez filled the stat sheet for the Falcons, finishing with 11 digs, three assists and two aces, coming one shy of her career-highs in both assists and aces.

The Falcons will conclude their current homestand on Friday (Oct. 11), hosting Central Michigan in a 6 p.m. start at the Stroh Center. The match will be Dig Pink for breast cancer awareness.
