BGVB Earns AVCA Team Academic Award For 25th Consecutive Year
LEXINGTON, Ky. – For the 25th consecutive year and 26th total year, the Bowling Green State University volleyball program has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, sponsored by INTENT. To qualify, teams must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. Additionally, the Falcons earned the Honor Roll distinction as part of the top 20-percent of team GPAs in Division I, a recognition only 47 teams received.
BGSU's 25-year streak is tied for the second longest in Division I with Toledo and behind only Indiana State (27 years). Overall, this award marked the 26th in program history for the Falcons, ranking third among NCAA Division I programs. Indiana State and Morehead State are tied for the most with 27 awards.
This is the sixth season the Falcons have been named to the AVCA Academic Honor Roll, previously receiving the honor in 2018 and 2020, in addition to the last four years. Bowling Green is one of just seven teams in the nation to be named to the AVCA Academic Honor Roll each of the last four seasons, being joined by Harvard, Kansas, Memphis, Northern Iowa, South Dakota and Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the accomplishment.
As a team, the Falcons posted a cumulative GPA of 3.793 with 11 student-athletes making the Dean's List and nine posting a 4.000 term GPA in the spring.
"Our student-athletes have continued our tradition of excellence in the classroom with this outstanding academic achievement, earning the AVCA Academic Award for the 25th consecutive year and ranking among the top 20-percent of GPAs in Division I nationwide," said BGSU head coach Alex DelPiombo. "This recognition highlights their dedication and commitment to excelling on and off the court. We believe in representing our program and Bowling Green State University in all things we do and this is a great example of that value.
"We are very grateful for our BGSU faculty, staff and Student-Athlete Services, particularly our academic advisor, Meghan Horn, whose guidance and support have been vital to sustaining this impressive achievement. The people that work behind the scenes to help our student-athletes excel are the backbone of our program's success and we appreciate their hard work and care."
Bowling Green will return to Mo and Jon Stansbery Court at the Stroh Center on Aug. 23 for an exhibition against Youngstown State, set for a 1 p.m. first serve. The regular season for the Orange and Brown will begin on the road on Aug. 29 with matches against both Temple and North Dakota State, beginning the day at 2 p.m. EST. The regular season home opener for BGSU is scheduled for Sept. 17 against Oakland, scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
