Falcons Fall in Overtime in Hard Fought Game to #15 Minnesota State, 3-2

MANKATO, Minn. – The Bowling Green Falcons (5-7-2, CCHA 2-4-2) fell to the #15 Minnesota State Mavericks (12-4-2, 7-1-2) by a score of 3-2 in overtime. In the loss, sophomore Ben Doran recorded his third goal of the season and senior Ryan O'Hara extended his team leading 10 assists.

MANKATO, Minn. – The Bowling Green Falcons (5-7-2, CCHA 2-4-2) fell to the #15 Minnesota State Mavericks (12-4-2, 7-1-2) by a score of 3-2 in overtime. In the loss, sophomore Ben Doran recorded his third goal of the season and senior Ryan O'Hara extended his team leading 10 assists.

  • Sophomore Ben Doran scored his third goal of the season and sixth point of the season in the first period
  • Junior Jaden Grant recorded his second goal of the season in the beginning of the third period
  • On Doran's goal, senior Ryan O'Hara took sole ownership of the point lead with 10, all assists

By The Numbers

How It Happened 

  • Sophomore Brandon Santa Juana was back in the lineup for his third game of the season .
  • The Falcons struck first at 3:46 in the first period, when junior Quinn Emerson found Sophomore Ben Doran in the slot to make it 1-0. 
  • The lead would not last long as 18 seconds later the Mavericks would find the equalizer.
  • Through the 1st period, the Bowling Green was leading in the three categories: shots 15-11, shots on goal 7-4 and face-offs 8-5. 
  • Just over halfway through the second period, Minnesota State would double their goal total to make it 2-1. 
  • At the end of the 2nd period, the Falcons were outshooting the Mavericks 36-25. 
  • BGSU would start the third period on a power-play after Minnesota State committed a slashing penalty with about one minute left in the second period, but the Falcons were unable to find the equalizer
  • About a minute and a half into the third, junior Eric Parker, behind the net, found junior Jaden Grant for a quick snapshot in front of the net to tie it at 2-2.
  • With just under three minutes left in the regulation, sophomore Cole Moore made a spectacular blocker save to help force overtime.
  • In overtime, senior Ryan O'Hara took a penalty to help prevent a breakaway for the Mavericks. 
  • Minnesota State capitalized on the man-advantage scoring the game-winner at 1:34 into the extra period.

The Falcons will be back at home next weekend, Dec. 14-15 for a conference series against the Northern Michigan Wildcats.
